| <blockquote> Red Sky springs into the new season in its lively and energetic pace, with a ten-week tour to British Columbia underway and several new initiatives on the go.
Red Sky continues a ten-week BC tour, with 74 performances in over 48 communities across the province, with an added performance at the Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse. Currently, Red Sky is touring Raven Stole the Sun, a delightful one-act play for family audiences, throughout the province of British Columbia through June 12, 2007. The cast is touring border to border - from the north in Lower Post (3 km from the Yukon) to the south in Grand Forks (borders with Washington, USA), and to Prince Rupert on the Pacific coast.
Upon returning from BC, Red Sky will tour to Ottawa and Quebec from June 20 to 22, 2007 for National Aboriginal Day celebrations at the Museum of Civilization, presented by Aboriginal Experiences as part of the 2007 Ottawa National Aboriginal Day (NAD) on behalf of the National Capitol Region Committee.
Red Sky remains committed to adding to its artistic repertoire of new original work, and expanding the artistic and cultural breadth of Canada and beyond. With this in mind, Red Sky will create two new original works this season. In July 2007, we will be making an exciting and inspiring journey to Mongolia and China. While in Mongolia, Artistic Director Sandra Laronde will attend the a national event that combines the cultural and artistic expression of Mongolia. Currently, Red Sky is in the creation phase of a new contemporary dance piece that will delve into the unique and intriguing parallels of the Indigenous peoples of Canada, Mongolia and China.
Red Sky's developing partner for this project is The Banff Centre. Red Sky has cultivated an exceptional working relationship with The Banff Centre through past performances and last year's highly successful residency and standing ovation performances at The Summer Arts Festival. The Banff Centre provides an excellent and artistically supportive environment for this highly anticipated new creation.
Our new creation for family audiences penned by multi-award winning playwright Drew Hayden Taylor, with music by Gemini nominee Donald Quan, will begin touring this season. This new theatre/dance piece for young audiences will begin touring this season.
Red Sky's upcoming year will be filled with continued touring, and in the fall, Red Sky is thrilled to be performing Raven Stole the Sun to home audiences in Toronto at the Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People. With two weeks of performances from October 9 to 21, 2007, Red Sky is delighted to have the opportunity to be performing at the innovative LKTYP.
Following the run at LKTYP, Red Sky will tour to exciting New York City in November 2007, for a performance at the National Museum of the American Indian.
In 2008, Red Sky will tour to Atlantic Canada’s provinces including New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island from April 3 to 14, 2008. This tour, presented by the Atlantic Presenters Association, is Red Sky's second foray out east, and will take the cast to prestigious venues including: The Playhouse in Fredericton, Imperial Theatre in Saint John, Capitol Theatre in Moncton, Confederation for the Arts in Charlottetown, Osprey Arts Centre in Shelburne, and Kings Theatre in Annapolis.
April 15 to 25, 2008, will see Red Sky touring through Greater Toronto Area schools through Prologue to the Performing Arts, a Toronto-based organization dedicated to enriching the lives of young people by connecting them to high quality live performing arts.
In addition to touring, Red Sky remains committed to its Speaking and Community Engagement Initiatives. Red Sky offers public speaking opportunities, engages in educational outreach, behind-the-scenes and green room experiences, and community and artistic development through dialogue, lecture presentations, company classes, workshops, and open rehearsals in order to enrich our communities.
These recent engagements include: a guest lecturer on contemporary Indigenous performance and Red Sky’s creative process at the University of Toronto; a guest speaker at Brock University on Empowerment Through the Arts as part of the second annual Aboriginal Women’s Day that celebrates positive Aboriginal women in today’s society, leadership, social justice and artistic expression; a workshop in Movement and Voice for 15 students of the Urban Aboriginal Alternative High School at the Odawa Native Friendship Centre, co-presented by the Canada Dance Festival and the National Arts Centre. Components of the workshop included Red Sky's creative process, a presentation of DVD excerpts of performances, and an interactive component including movement, voice, and improvisation. In addition, Artistic Director Sandra Laronde will be a panelist and speaker at Canadian Heritage's Portfolio Committee on Aboriginal Affairs.
