For the past few years, the Fringe has
been developing several long term projects that would allow us to provide
more performance and development opportunities to theatre
artists. Thanks to a multi-year grant award from the Ontario
Trillium Foundation we are pleased to announce the creation
of The Next Stage Theatre Festival to kick
off our 20th anniversary season.
The Next Stage Festival will run from
January 2 - 13, 2008 at the Factory Mainspace and Studio theatres and will
provide 8-10 theatre companies
with the opportunity to continue their artistic
momentum.
The Next Stage Festival will incorporate many of the
popular and successful elements of the Fringe (affordable ticket prices and
passes, a central Fringe Club, etc.) but will also distinguishing itself by
incorporating new elements that will provide it with its own unique flavour.
Setting itself apart from the Fringe, The Next Stage Theatre Festival will be a
curated event with a panel selecting the participating companies based on the
merits of a finished script and past artistic success. The festival will also be
providing some limited production support to the companies to assist with their
show.
The festival is interested in projects from emerging and
established theatre artists/companies that are developing new work and/or
exploring new artistic avenues. Applicants (company, primary contact or
playwright) must have previously produced an artistically successful production
in a member festival of the Canadian Association of Fringe®
Festivals to be eligible for The Next Stage Theatre Festival. New original
plays, remounted/reworked productions and original adaptations are all eligible
for submission. Site specific productions will also be considered but location
ideas must be vetted by the Fringe Producer prior to submission. Applications of
plays by renowned international playwrights (Beckett, Pinter, Shakespeare, etc.)
are not eligible for submission.
The primary requirement for this new festival is a
completed script that has been thoroughly developed and a submitting
company/artist(s) that has received artistic or critical success with a previous
production and could use this performance opportunity to maintain their artistic
momentum and career development. We welcome applications from artists who are
exploring new creative frontiers and/or who are creating in one or more of a
variety of genres such as theatre, musicals, interdisciplinary, comedy, opera,
physical theatre etc.
The deadline to apply for
the Next Stage Festival is May 18 and a copy of the application form and
policies can be downloaded from our website at www.fringetoronto.com If you
have any questions about this new event please feel free to contact Bridget
MacIntosh at performer@fringetoronto.com
We're really looking
forward to receiving some excellent applications for this new festival and we
hope you'll consider applying.
All the
best.
