Rodin: A Magnificent Obsession

This acclaimed exhibition demonstrates the intensely expressive
work of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), who, at the peak
of his career, was considered the greatest sculptor since Michelangelo
and is now acknowledged as the “father of modern sculpture.”

Featuring his most famous and beloved works – such as the “The
Thinker,” “The Kiss” and “The Age of Bronze” – this comprehensive
retrospective of over 60 bronzes also includes many of the artist’s
studies for such major monuments as “The Burghers of Calais,” “The
Gates of Hell,” and “The Monument to Balzac” as well as photographs and
etchings. This exhibition has been organized by the Iris and B. Gerald
Cantor Foundation which holds the world’s largest private collection of
Rodin sculptures. The works in this exhibition are originals, either
cast during Rodin’s lifetime or cast posthumously according to his
explicit wishes and instructions to the French government.

Accompanying this exhibition are works on paper from the National
Gallery of Canada by Rodin’s contemporaries in the influential art
circles of turn-of-the-century Paris, including Marcel Duchamp, Auguste
Renoir and Edward Steichen.


Persian Steel: The Tanavoli Collection

This fascinating collection of steel objects, dating from the 16th
to the early 20th century, tells a compelling story about life in the
Middle East during this period. Objects made of steel were associated
with every aspect of traditional Persian life, from war and hunting,
through to religious life, the marketplace and the domestic
environment. Reputed for their geometric, calligraphic, figurative and
arabesque adornments, the pieces exhibited here demonstrate a concern
for aesthetics

and form that has slowly dissipated through the import

of mass-produced items.

LAB 6.5: The Fortress of History, Ian Birse & Laura Kavanaugh

<img alt="">Ian Birse and Laura Kavanagh documented the discovery of
discarded objects, photographing them on-site as well as recording a
sonic snapshot of sound at each location. Visitors to the exhibition
can manipulate the audio and video material, which will then be
reworked into the exhibition by the artists creating a "hybrid of human
action and digital process."

LAB 7.0: inFORM | deFORM | reFORM, Marcia Huyer


May 25 until July 22, 2007<img alt="">
As if emerging from the white walls of the gallery, Marcia Huyer's
giant, inflatable Tyvek sculptures conjure both organic and
architectural forms. Huyer reinterprets the scale and form of familiar
existing objects. The result is no longer deinable but is somehow
quizzically reconizable of their body's perimeters and formalities."
For her lab project, she will draw on the gallery's architecture as
inspiration for her sculpture.

Join Bill Porteous for a lecture on the lost-wax process, the common
casting method though the ages. The lost-wax process allows the artist
to acccurately reproduce th delicate nuances of the original model.
