CREATIVE DRAMA Ages 5-7
Creative Drama is a wonderful program for young students. It features drama games, creative movement, storytelling, and dramatic role-play through which students act out stories with the teacher in role.
Students develop dramatic skills and expression, imagination, creativity, and the ability to cooperate with others.

DRAMA TIME Ages 8 –10
In this unique program, students build and create a small play from a story, myth, or legend. Students will continue to expand and develop the main areas of learning including creative movement, improvisation, cooperative drama development, and stage awareness.
Their play will be shared with a small audience on the last class.

FOR TEENS






ACTING FOR THE SERIOUS STUDENT Ages 11–13 This is a class for students who are keen, focused and ready to take on the challenge of an acting class. They need to have proficient reading skills and are able to work well with others. Students will continue to expand and develop basic theatrical skills in movement, voice, acting techniques, improvisation stage presence and awareness.
Along with their skill development, they will work on a performance piece which they will perform before an in studio audience at the end of the term. Group participation and commitment is crucial to the building of a working ensemble of students, therefore attendance is very important. Each term will have a particular performance focus from learning monologue development to scene study to different styles of theatre.

ACTING FOR TEENS – INTERMEDIATE Ages 13–17 This class is designed for students with dramatic training and a keen interest in theatre. Students will be encouraged and challenged to expand their theatrical abilities through physical, vocal and theatrical exercises. Each term will have a specific dramatic focus and at the end they will share their work with an audience.


Winter Session:
In this session, students choose a character from a play, movie or novel and dramatically build and create this character to perform as a monologue. Movement, voice, character study, text evaluation all will be used to help the students discover, explore and strengthen their acting abilities. Previous students have created and performed a wide and diverse range of monologues including Shakespearean characters, characters from literature (ie classics - Alice in Wonderland, or fantasy, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter) film characters such as Scarlett Ohara and Forest Gump) and from modern plays (Braidie, Shape of a Girl). The group will also have the fun challenge of developing a scene with all these characters together in one room together! They will perfom their work for an in-studio audience at the end.

Spring Session:
For students ready to take the next challenging but exciting step of studying and performing in a full one-act play. Together, they will bring the play to life by studying and building the characters, discussing and exploring the text and its meaning, creating the set and building a simple costume design.They will perform the play before an audience in June. Attendance at all classes is crucial.

ADVANCED PERFORMANCE GROUP Ages 14–18
This highly regarded and popular program, now entering its tenth year, provides serious theatre students with an opportunity to train extensively. Students study movement, voice, improvisation and acting techniques and engage in self-evaluation, group discussion and collaboration. The 7 month long course also provides the opportunity to study specific methodologies with guest instructors from Victoria's professional theatre community. Text, subtext, story, and characters of a two act play are studied in depth and rehearsed. In the spring, the program culminates with the students presenting their work to the community in a professional theatre. From beginning to end, from read through, to rehearsal, to memorization, to having head shots, bios done for the theatre and to the final performance with set, sound, lights and costumes, these students have the opportunity to learn what a professional does. In May, look for these students and their production in local papers and television stations. This is a great opportunity for aspiring young actors/actresses to watch and be inspired by their peers who are tackling a serious piece of creative work.

FOR ADULTS




ACTING EXPLORATION
This is course will allow students to delve into a full length play.
Initially, they will read, discuss and explore dramatically the themes and underlying tensions in the play. Kate will also lead and teach vocal, movement and acting techniques to help with their investigation. They will then choose certain scenes from the play to work on, memorize and ultimately perform before a small in-studio audience. This is a chance for people who are wanting to take that next step in their dramatic learning where they actually have an audience to witness and support their work.

THE INSTRUCTORS


KATE RUBIN has lived and worked professionally as an actor and drama
teacher in Victoria for 20 years. She has worked as an instructor and
workshop leader for many theatres, schools and organizations in the
city including Kaleidoscope Theatre, Langham Court Theatre, Theatre
Inconnu, Camosun College and the University of Victoria. She has been
running her own studio since 1996. She is currently on staff with The
Belfry Theatre facilitating their Belfry 101 Program for high school
students. Kate has performed for many local theatre companies and her
most recent work as an actor was this fall with William Head On
Stage’s Macbeth and will be performing at The Metro with Wave
Theatre’s production of Marion Bridge by Daniel MacIvor in early
January.


JOHN EMMET TRACY received his training at Rose Bruford College/
University of Manchester, The National Shakespeare Conservatory in
NYC, and The University of Wisconsin. Originally from Chicago, he has
performed in over sixty stage productions, including Hamlet in Hamlet
(Japan tour), Biff in Death Of A Salesman, Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet
and recently appeared in The Butcher’s Apron with Theatre Inconnu.
Recent film/TV credits include the series The Dead Zone, the mini-
series Terminal City, and the television movie Safe Harbor. He has
been teaching youth and adults film and stage acting in Victoria for
the last two years at many schools in the city including Kaleidoscope
Theatre, Screen Actors Studio, and Stardust Children's Theatre.




REGISTRATION & POLICY


To register and for information call 386-8593. Class fees are due
with registration, and may be paid in full or with post-dated cheques
up to the last week of class. GST is included in all prices. All NSF
cheques returned by the bank will be subject to a $20 fee.
Cancellations less than 7 days prior to the start of classes will
be subject to a $25 non-refundable charge. Cancellations after
classes have commenced will be refunded only when due to illness or
injury and will be subject to provision of a doctor’s letter. No
refunds will be issued for students who quit for other reasons.
New students joining throughout the year are welcome to drop in for
their first class, for which they will be charged. After the first
class, a commitment will be required to continue.
